Libya Travel Itineraries

At Magic Carpet Travel we run a selection of fully escorted tours for those wishing to travel to Libya as part of a small group with a tour guide. Our English-speaking guides are all very experienced and knowledgeable. Any of these tours can be combined with one of our optional Ghadames or Desert Extensions.

If you are interested in any of these tours but the exact routes do not suit your requirements, please contact us and we can tailor-make a similar itinerary just for you. Our tours are action packed to make sure you get the most out of your trip to Libya, at a value for money price. However, if you prefer to travel at a gentler pace, then we can add in days at leisure or take more time to explore the various sights.

Classic Libya
Tripolitana and Cyrenaica - 6 days, 5 nights

No trip to Libya is ever long enough but if you have time or budget restrictions then this tour allows you to see the main classical sites that Libya boasts. You will have plenty of time to experience the bustle of of the old town and souk of Tripoli, the extensive Roman ruins of Leptis Magna and the magnificent Roman theatre at Sabratha. Flying east you will stay in Benghazi and visit the magnificently well-preserved Roman capital of Ptolemais, Qaser Libya with its unrivalled collection of Byzantine mosaics, the ancient port of Apollonia, and the beautiful Greek city of Cyrene with its massive Doric Temple of Zeus. Libya - The Essence
Tripolitana, Cyrenaica and Ghadames - 9 days, 8 nights

For those with more time, this tour is designed to show you all the main highlights that Libya has to offer. As well as getting to know the bustling capital of Tripoli, you will visit the classical cities of the Mediterranean coastline, with their magnificent Roman and Greek remains. You will then head south-west to the ancient oasis town of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage site, travelling en route through stunning desert scenery and stopping at ancient villages, granaries and even troglodyte cave dwellings. This trip can be combined with one of our optional 2 or 4-night desert extensions which take you deep into the Sahara Desert for an unforgettable stay in a luxury tented camp.

Magic of Libya
Tripolitana, Cyrenaica and the Desert - 9 days, 8 nights

Magic of Libya is ideal for those who wish to see all the classical sites of Libya but who also want to travel through the stunning scenery of the Sahara Desert. You will experience the excitement of dune-surfing in the vast Ubari 'sand sea', visit the palm-fringed oases of the Ubari Lakes and stay in a luxury tented camp. More info.

If you would like to spend more time in the desert this tour can be combined with the optional 5-day/4-night desert extension which will allow you to further explore the Akakus Mountains and the oasis of Al Aweinat.

Long Weekend in Tripolitana
Tripoli, Leptis Magna, Sabratha - 4 days, 3 nights

If you are looking for an extraordinary long weekend away, then this trip will leave you thoroughly exhilarated, your thirst for history quenched and your senses tingling. Staying in one of Tripoli's top hotel's overlooking the azure blue Mediterranean, you will have time to relax by the pool, as well as plenty of opprtunity to explore the city's delights. Each day you will spend some time in Tripoli, exploring the elegant mosques, the animated souk, visiting the Jamahiriya Museum, and searching out hidden restaurants serving local delicacies. You will also spend ample time at each of the classical sites either side of Tripoli. The ancient cities of Leptis Magna and Sabratha are arguably the most impressive classical ruins in the whole Mediterranean. Together with Tripoli, these were the 'three cities' of the Roman province of Africa from which modern Tripoli takes its name. More info.

Libya Desert Adventure
Tripolitana and the Desert - 9 days, 8 nights

This tour is designed for those who only want to see the essential classical sites of Tripolitana and then take off on an action-packed adventure deep in the Sahara Desert. You will have plenty of time visit Tripoli, the extensive Roman ruins of Leptis Magna and the magnificent Roman theatre at Sabratha. In the desert you will spend four nights in luxury tented camps, dining under the stars surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Libyan Sahara. By day you will visit the oasis town of Germa, the ancient village of Gaberoun, fully explore the mountainous Akakus desert region to the east of Ghat, swim in the spectacular Ubari Lakes, dune-surf in the Ubari 'sand sea', drink fresh spring water in the northern oasis of Al Aweinat and marvel at the prehistoric rock paintings and carvings to be found along the way. Ancient Libya
Tripolitania and Ghadames - 6 days, 5 nights

Combining the classical sites of Tripolitana with a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ghadames, this tour is a great option for first-timers to Libya or those with limited time. As well as getting to know the bustling capital of Tripoli, you will visit the Roman ruins of Sabratha and Leptis Magna. You will then head south-west to the ancient oasis town of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage site, travelling en route through stunning desert scenery and stopping at ancient villages, granaries and even troglodyte cave dwellings. This trip can be combined with the 3-night optional desert extension which takes you to Sebha, the Ubari Lakes, Sahara Desert. More info.

Desert Extension - 3 days, 2 nights OR 5 days, 4 nights

Any of our tours can be combined with a 3- or 5-day desert extension, allowing you to explore the fascinating and enchanting Sahara desert. After an internal flight to Sebha, you will drive through the desert by jeep to the luxury tented camp of Ubari Magic Lodge. From here you will drive to the Wadi Mathkandush stopping at Germa, an oasis town, founded by the Garamentes, legendary and mysterious population of the Libyan Sahara. You can dune surf in the Ubari 'sand sea' and visit the spectacular freshwater lakes of the Awbaru region.

The 5-day/4-night extension allows you further time to fully explore the Akakus Mountains and the northern oasis of Al Aweinat and includes two nights at the Akakus Magic Lodge. More info.

Ghadames Extension - 3 days, 2 nights

Any of our tours can be combined with a 3-day Ghadames extension allowing you to visit this oasis town, often called the 'Jewel of the Sahara'. A UNESCO World Heritage site, its distinctive white-painted mud buildings and winding alleyways are a photographer's dream. Ghadames has a history spanning over 5000 years and, as home to the Tuareg Berbers, this is one of the oldest pre-Saharan settlements. Our drives to and from Ghadames take us through the wild and rugged scenery of the Nafusa mountains. We will stop at Nalut where the winding streets are built on an escarpment with spectacular views, and look at the ghurfas - wonderful old multi-storey, fortified granaries. At Gharyan, a troglodyte village, we will admire the cave dwellings dug vertically down into the ground. More info.
